Peter Chen - Biography
Peter Chen is a Chinese Australian who has a diversified corporate background with over 40 years experience in Australia and Asian Pacific Regions. He has held senior executive positions with large American, Canadian and Australian corporations in the fields of construction, mining and property development.
Born in Tianjin in Northern China, Chen has lived in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Borneo and Singapore before arriving in Australia in 1961.
In 1978, Chen established the entrepreneurial consulting firm Peter Chen & Partners Pty Ltd in Brisbane (since merged with Sabina Corporation Limited in 2003 to become G8 Consultants). The firm has undertaken a very wide range of assignments for clients.
He is also one of very few Chinese to head a public company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. Chen started his career in accountancy and business management. He then gradually moved into the property development industry, both as a consultant and as a developer in his own right.
He currently leads a team of specialists that can undertake major projects in Australia and overseas.
In China, Chen has acted as a Special Adviser to a number of government organizations. He has also provided advisory services to Government Ministers in Papua New Guinea , Solomon Islands, Cook Islands and Micronesia .
Chen has been responsible for the conceptual ideas for many major national and international development proposals/tenders, including the Tianjin Financial Center, Hobart Fisherman’s Wharf, Expo 88 Hotel, Sydney 2000 Olympics Hotel, the Three Gorges Theme Park in Beijing and China World in Vancouver.
Chen is a member of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries, the Australian Institute of Management, Australian Society of Senior Executives and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He was a past Vice-President of the Housing Industry Association in Queensland, past President of the Chinese Australian Chamber of Commerce – Gold Coast and a past Founding Director of the Founders Forum Limited, and is currently the Chairman & CEO of the listed Sabina Corporation Limited.
Chen served as a Member of the Council of the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane and completed his 3-year term in November 2001.
In March 2002, Chen was appointed by the Queensland Government to serve as a Board Member on the Valuers Registration Board of Queensland. He completed his 3-year term in February 2005.
In late September 2008, Chen was invited to China and was presented the award for "Outstanding Chinese Entrepreneur" at the Third Chinese Enterprise Association Summit held in Beijing.
